It still deals with story beats further in the future, however, leaving things open for new games in the Half-Life series. Rather than being a true sequel to Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Half-Life: Alyx takes place between Half-Life and Half-Life 2. The question is whether the next game in the franchise will be Half-Life: Alyx 2 or the long-awaited Half-Life 3. Longtime fans may have been worried for the franchise's future after a high-cost, VR-only entry, but Half-Life: Alyx's ending shows Valve isn't done making Half-Life games. Valve's first return to the Half-Life series in almost 13 years came in the form of Half-Life: Alyx.
